What the Aircon Installation Process Involves

A new air conditioner should do more than blow cold air on the day it is fitted. A properly managed aircon installation process considers room size, system capacity, electrical safety, drainage, airflow and long-term service access before the unit is switched on. Get those details right and your system is more likely to cool efficiently through a Brisbane summer, operate quietly and deliver the service life you expect.

For homeowners, that may mean choosing between a split system and ducted air conditioning. For a business, it can involve planning around trading hours, staff comfort, stock protection and downtime. The equipment matters, but the quality of the installation is what turns that equipment into a reliable cooling solution.

It starts with a site assessment, not a guess

The first stage of an aircon installation is assessing the property and understanding what the system needs to achieve. A technician should inspect the rooms or areas to be conditioned, measure the space and identify factors that affect heat load. These include ceiling height, insulation, window size and direction, roof exposure, occupancy, appliances and how the area is used.

A sun-facing living room with large glass doors has very different cooling demands to a shaded bedroom of the same floor area. Likewise, a café kitchen, server room or retail space may need a system designed around equipment heat, customer traffic or strict operating hours.

This assessment also confirms practical installation details. The technician needs to find suitable locations for indoor and outdoor units, check access for equipment and identify a safe route for pipework, condensate drainage and electrical cabling. Choosing the right system and capacity

System selection should follow the assessment. Oversizing and undersizing both create problems. An undersized air conditioner may run continuously without reaching a comfortable temperature, particularly during heatwaves. An oversized system can cycle on and off too frequently, waste energy and leave rooms feeling clammy because it does not run long enough to remove adequate humidity.

For a single room or a small defined area, a wall-mounted split system is often a practical option. It is generally cost-effective to install, straightforward to maintain and allows individual room control. Multi-head systems can serve several rooms from one outdoor unit, although they are not always the best fit for every layout.

Ducted air conditioning can suit larger homes, offices and venues where whole-building comfort and a cleaner visual finish are priorities. It requires more planning because duct runs, ceiling space, zoning, return-air paths and controller locations all affect performance. The right option depends on the building, budget, use of the space and how much independent temperature control is required.

A good installer will explain the trade-offs in plain language, including likely running costs, placement limitations and maintenance requirements. The cheapest quote is not always the lowest-cost outcome if it leaves you with poor airflow, difficult access or a system that is not sized for the job.

Preparing the installation area

Once the system and locations are confirmed, the work area is prepared. For a residential split system, this usually means protecting floors and furnishings near the indoor unit location, confirming clear wall space and ensuring the outdoor unit has a stable base with sufficient airflow around it.

Outdoor units should not be squeezed into a hot, enclosed corner or positioned where discharged air recirculates back through the unit. They also need to be installed with consideration for noise, neighbour proximity, service access and drainage. A unit that cannot be safely accessed later is harder and more expensive to maintain.

For ducted systems, preparation can include access to the roof cavity, placement of the indoor fan coil, duct layout and installation of supply and return grilles. Commercial installations may require staged works, isolation of existing equipment, permits or coordination with other trades. Planning this properly reduces disruption and helps keep a job on schedule.

Installing indoor and outdoor equipment

The physical installation begins with securely mounting the indoor unit or positioning the ducted equipment. The installer then fits the outdoor condensing unit on an appropriate base, wall bracket or roof mounting arrangement, depending on the site. Mounting must be stable, level and suitable for the unit’s weight and operating vibration.

Refrigerant pipework is run between the indoor and outdoor components, along with communication cable, power wiring where required and condensate drainage. The pipework is insulated and protected, while wall penetrations are sealed to help prevent water ingress and maintain a neat finish.

Drainage deserves particular attention in Queensland’s humid conditions. As an air conditioner cools air, it removes moisture that must drain away safely. Poor drainage can lead to water leaks, damage to walls or ceilings, mould concerns and call-backs that could have been avoided. The drain needs the correct fall or an appropriate condensate pump where gravity drainage is not possible.

Electrical work must be completed by appropriately licensed professionals. Air conditioning systems also involve refrigerant handling, which must be carried out by technicians with the required licences and approvals. This is not a DIY job, and it is not an area where shortcuts are worth the risk.

The commissioning stage of the aircon installation process

Installation is not finished when the units are mounted. Commissioning is where the system is checked, tested and set up to operate as intended. The refrigerant lines are pressure-tested and evacuated to remove air and moisture before refrigerant is released or charged in line with the manufacturer’s requirements.

The technician then starts the system and checks cooling performance, airflow, electrical operation, refrigerant pressures and condensate drainage. On ducted systems, this can include checking zones, outlets, return-air performance and controller settings. On commercial work, commissioning may also involve confirming control sequences, integrating equipment with existing services or verifying that critical areas hold the required temperature.

A careful test identifies issues before they become your problem. Rattles, drain faults, communication errors and poor airflow are much easier to correct while the installation team is still onsite than after the first hot weekend of the season.

Handover, warranty and ongoing care

Before the job is signed off, you should be shown how to use the controller, select modes, set realistic temperatures and clean accessible filters. Ask where the isolator is located, how the system drains and what signs might indicate a fault. Clear handover information helps you use the system efficiently from the start.

Keep your installation paperwork, warranty details and service records in a safe place. Manufacturer warranties can have conditions, and routine servicing helps protect performance over time. For businesses, planned maintenance is especially valuable because a failing air conditioner or refrigeration asset can affect staff, customers, stock and trading conditions.

At home, cleaning filters regularly and keeping the outdoor unit clear of leaves, grass clippings and stored items are simple jobs that make a real difference. If cooling drops off, water appears around the unit, unusual noise develops or a fault code shows on the controller, arrange a professional inspection rather than running the system harder.

Timing an installation in South-East Queensland

Demand for air conditioning work rises sharply before and during summer. Booking an installation before the hottest period gives you more flexibility with system choice and scheduling. It also avoids making a rushed decision after an old unit fails during a heatwave.

For commercial sites, scheduling can be just as important as selecting the equipment.
